Sample: SEO audit of Upright

Upright’s site is technically sound. Its problem is that search engines have not found it yet, and that the people searching for it meet competitors and forum threads first. Here is what to do, in order.

1 · Summary

Good pages that nobody can find yet

The crawl of all 8 pages found one problem: two slow responses. Titles and descriptions are within length, every page has one H1, a canonical and its text in the HTML, and the structured data is better than that of the three competitors checked. But no Upright page appeared for any of the 10 buyer searches below, for its own name or for a site: search. The site is days old. The first job is getting it indexed; the next is covering the competitors and searches where readers look now.

2 · The 5 fixes

The 5 fixes that matter most

Ranked by impact, not by how easy they are. Each has the page, the reason and the exact fix.

  1. Get the site into search indexes

    Page
    Whole site
    Why
No page from upright.hellobasalt.dev appeared for any of the 10 phrases, for a brand query or for a site: query (WebSearch and Brave, 20 Oct 2026). The sitemap lastmod dates are 17 to 19 Oct 2026 and the repo was created on 13 Oct, so the site is days old. The on-page work is good, but nothing else on this list matters until the pages are indexed.
    Fix
Search Console and Bing already cover the site (the hellobasalt.dev domain property; sitemap submitted 18 Oct), so use URL Inspection to request indexing for /, /logi-options-alternatives, /mx-vertical and the three vs pages; turn on IndexNow (Cloudflare Crawler Hints). Recheck coverage after 7 and 14 days.
  2. Add OpenLogi and Mouser to the alternatives page, and add an Upright vs OpenLogi page

    Page
    /logi-options-alternatives; new /upright-vs-openlogi
    Why
OpenLogi ranks #3 and #5 on Brave for “logi options+ alternative mac”, has 23.8k GitHub stars and press coverage; Mouser ranks with its repo and a Hacker News thread. Both are free, open source and speak HID++ like Upright. A comparison page that skips the closest competitors reads as incomplete to someone arriving from those results.
    Fix
Add OpenLogi and Mouser rows to the “At a glance” table and a short section for each with a fair “pick this if” line. OpenLogi lists per-app profiles as in progress on its Product Hunt post, so check its current README before writing. Note that OpenLogi is notarized and installable with Homebrew; Upright is neither. Retitle to “Logi Options+ alternatives for Mac (2026): 7 apps compared” and update the “Updated” date and meta description. Build /upright-vs-openlogi from the vs page template and link it from the alternatives page, the home page and the other vs pages.
  3. Get listed where “X alternative” searches land, and fix the GitHub repo

    Page
    Off-site: AlternativeTo, GitHub, Homebrew tap
    Why
AlternativeTo is #1 on Brave for “steermouse alternative” and “mac mouse fix alternative”; Upright is not listed there. The GitHub repo is likely to be indexed first, but its description says MX Vertical only and it lacks the logi-options-alternative topic, whose topic page ranks #16 for the main phrase. Every close competitor has a brew install path; Upright has none.
    Fix
Submit Upright to AlternativeTo and suggest it on the Logi Options+, Logitech Options, SteerMouse, BetterMouse and Mac Mouse Fix pages. Change the repo description to “Free, open-source Logi Options+ alternative for Mac: remap Logitech mouse buttons over HID++” and add the topics logi-options-alternative, logitech-options, mouse-remapping, mx-master, logitech-mouse. Publish a personal Homebrew tap (brew install dpdev69/tap/upright); the main cask repo needs notarization first. Product Hunt and an r/macapps post are the owner’s call; the audit posts nothing.
  4. Add an MX Master page

    Page
New MX Master page (MX Master 3S, MX Master 4 and MX Master 3)
    Why
“mx master 3s mac without logi options” returns 9 Reddit or forum results in the Brave top 10 and no product or guide page, so a direct answer has little competition. LinguaX already answers “Can I set it up for an MX Master 3S / 4 without Logi Options+?” in a People also ask box. The home page names the MX Master line as expected to work, but only the MX Vertical has a page.
    Fix
Copy the /mx-vertical structure (button list, connections, FAQ with FAQPage markup, BreadcrumbList). Say plainly that the MX Master has not been verified on real hardware and link the “new mouse” issue template so owners can report results. List only buttons the code supports. Link it from the home page, the alternatives page and the footer. Shipped by Upright’s owner on 20 Oct 2026.
  5. Add a “Logitech side buttons not working on Mac” page

    Page
    New /logitech-side-buttons-mac
    Why
Problem phrasing with buyer intent. The Brave top 10 is all forum threads plus SensibleSideButtons, which a listing found through WebSearch describes as abandoned with no native Apple silicon build. No current, maintained guide ranks.
    Fix
A short how-to: why macOS ignores or mishandles Logitech back and forward buttons; the free fix with Upright (Logitech mice only, with steps and a screenshot); what to use for other brands (LinearMouse, Mac Mouse Fix, SteerMouse, as the alternatives page already does); a FAQ with FAQPage markup. Title: “Logitech mouse side buttons not working on Mac? Fix it free”. Link it from the home page and the MX pages.

3 · Keyword opportunities

10 searches buyers make, and the page for each

Positions are from Brave on 20 Oct 2026; “WebSearch” rows come from a research search index, where the order is relevance, not position. Upright appeared for none of these phrases. No volumes (see “About this sample”).

People also ask

All three “People also ask” boxes seen on Brave were filled from LinguaX’s FAQ markup, with questions such as “Is there a Logi Options+ alternative that doesn’t require an account?” and “Is there a free BetterMouse alternative on Mac?”.

Brand searches

A search for Upright with “logitech mouse mac app hellobasalt” returned Logitech Lift vertical-mouse listings and no page from the site. “Upright” is also a generic word for vertical mice, so brand searches will stay crowded.

4 · SERP read

Who ranks for the top 3 phrases

Chosen by fit with what Upright does and by buyer intent: phrases 1, 7 and 3.

“logi options+ alternative mac”

  • Brave top 10: Reddit r/macapps; seerofsouls.com list; github.com/AprilNEA/OpenLogi; rknight.me blog list; openlogi.org; Reddit r/MacOS; blog.apps.deals list; alternativeto.net/software/logitech-options/; linguax.app comparison page; a forums.macrumors.com thread. Positions 11 to 20 add more Reddit, github.com/TomBadash/Mouser, a Hacker News thread about Mouser and github.com/topics/logi-options-alternative (#16).
  • Winning format: Reddit threads (6 of the top 20) and list articles. Two direct open-source competitors, OpenLogi and Mouser, rank with their GitHub repos and sites.
  • A People also ask box appeared, filled from LinguaX’s FAQPage markup.
  • AI answer: Brave offers an “Answer with AI” control, but an AI answer shown by default could not be confirmed. Google AI Overview: could not see.
  • Upright: not in the top 20.

“mx master 3s mac without logi options”

  • Brave: 9 of the top 10 are Reddit r/logitech threads or Apple Community and Medium posts, with titles such as “Assigning buttons on MX Master 3S on a Mac without the Logi Options”.
  • Winning format: discussion threads. No vendor or guide page ranks, so a page that answers the question directly would have little competition. OpenLogi has an MX Master 4 page and Mouser’s README leads with MX Master support; neither showed in this top 10.
  • No People also ask box. AI answer: could not see.
  • Upright: no page targets this; not in the top 20.

“logitech mouse side buttons not working mac”

  • Brave: Reddit r/LogitechG; sensible-side-buttons.archagon.net; a Mac Mouse Fix GitHub discussion; Apple Community; MPU Talk; Reddit r/macgaming; two Ask Different questions; more Apple Community and Reddit.
  • Winning format: forum threads plus one small single-purpose app, SensibleSideButtons, which a listing describes as abandoned with no native Apple silicon build.
  • No People also ask box. AI answer: could not see.
  • Upright: no page. It can only fix this for Logitech mice, and the page must say so.

5 · Competitor check

What three competitors have that Upright lacks

OpenLogi was not on the original list, but it is the closest match: free, open source, Logitech HID++, and it ranks for the main phrase. Upright’s repo had 1 GitHub star on 20 Oct 2026.

CompetitorWhat it has that Upright lacksWeak spots
OpenLogi
Free, open source, Logitech HID++; 23,802 GitHub stars. Ranks #3 and #5 on Brave for “logi options+ alternative mac”. Press (macg.co, bgr.com, ifun.de), a Product Hunt page, a MacPorts port and a Homebrew cask. A signed and notarized .dmg. 93 URLs in its docs sitemap, including a per-device MX Master 4 page and 67 HID++ reference pages. Not mentioned on Upright’s alternatives page.
Title tag is just “OpenLogi”; no JSON-LD on the home page.
BetterMouse
Homebrew cask, a MacUpdate listing, an AlternativeTo page, a Cult of Mac review and many Reddit threads. Listed on AlternativeTo’s Logi Options+ alternatives page (one of 4 apps there).
Home page has no H1 and no JSON-LD, a 407-character meta description, and a sitemap of 2 URLs. It wins on age, reviews and listings, not on-page work.
Mac Mouse Fix
11,116 GitHub stars, a Homebrew cask, an AlternativeTo page that ranks #1 for “mac mouse fix alternative”, a GitHub Discussions forum that ranks for problem searches, and a TechRepublic “best for Macs” mention (June 2026). Site in 33 languages.
Title tag is just “Mac Mouse Fix”; no JSON-LD.

Also noted: Mouser (free, open source, MX Master-first, a Hacker News thread, listed on AlternativeTo’s Logi Options+ page; its macOS builds are also ad-hoc signed) and LinguaX, which runs “X alternative” and “X vs Y” pages with FAQPage markup, 98 URLs in its sitemap. The competitors win on age, links, listings and press, not on-page basics.

Per-page images, for example the comparison table. Cosmetic.
Brand name overlap
Titles and listings
“Upright” collides with upright or vertical mouse product searches; the brand query returned Logitech Lift listings.
Keep “Logitech” and “Mac” next to the name in titles and directory listings, as the home title already does.
Cloudflare JavaScript Detections script on every page
All 8 pages
It did not block plain requests.
Confirm in Cloudflare that Bot Fight Mode is not challenging crawlers, and check that the privacy page describes the script if it stays on.

/logi-options-alternatives
Led by Logitech’s own status page and news about the January 2026 certificate outage.
None. The alternatives page already mentions the outage; a separate page is not worth it.

What already works

Clean titles and descriptions within length, one H1 per page, text in the raw HTML, canonical tags, sitemap and llms.txt in sync, SoftwareApplication, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList markup, and honest limits stated on the pages. http redirects to https, and an unknown address returns 404.

The crawl, page by page

Automated crawl of 20 Oct 2026, one request at a time, 8 of 8 pages. A client also gets this as a CSV.

What this audit did not cover

  • Google and Bing rankings, and Google AI Overviews. Google needs JavaScript and Bing returned unrelated results to plain requests. Brave positions stand in.
  • Search Console. The property had recorded no impressions for Upright by 20 Oct, so there was no query or click data to read.
  • Search volumes and backlinks. Both need a paid tool.
  • Core Web Vitals field data. None is expected for a site this new.
  • Posting anywhere. Listings, Product Hunt and Reddit are recommendations; the audit does not post in the owner’s name.
